Maine unemployment hits seven-year low

AUGUSTA, Maine — According to data from the Maine Department of Labor, the state’s unemployment rate was at 4.8 percent in March. That number was down from 5 percent in February and reflected the lowest unemployment rate in Maine since February 2008.

The March unemployment rate was also a big drop from the March 2014 unemployment figure of 5.8 percent. The number of unemployed workers in Maine declined 7,800 over the year to 32,100.

The unemployment rate was below the statewide average in all three metro areas: Portland-South Portland (4.4 percent), Lewiston-Auburn (5.3 percent) and Bangor (5.2 percent).

Comparatively, the U.S. preliminary unemployment rate of 5.5 percent was unchanged from February and down from 6.6 percent one year ago. The New England unemployment rate averaged 5.2 percent.
