Bixby & Co. owner named Young Entrepreneur of the Year
ROCKLAND, Maine – Kate McAleer, the owner of healthy candy bar maker Bixby & Co. in Rockland, has been named the 2015 Young Entrepreneur of the Year for both Maine and New England by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The 27-year-old entrepreneur, who started the business in her mother’s kitchen in 2011, now oversees an eight-person workforce handcrafting the company’s organic candy bars in a former ice plant in Rockland.
“It is always wonderful to see the creativity and determination that young entrepreneurs like Kate bring to their businesses,” said Marilyn Geroux, SBA District Director for Maine. “It is a particular pleasure to select a business that has decided to relocate to Maine, as Bixby has done.”
Bixby & Co. offers a variety of certified vegan, gluten free, organic chocolate bars hand-made with fruits, nuts and spices. McAleer noted the company has recorded 100 percent growth every year and that the firm hopes to have its candy bars in 1,000 across the nation by the end of the year.
The Young Entrepreneur of the Year recognition is just the latest honor for McAleer and Bixby & Co. In 2014, the company also took the $30,000 top prize in Gorham Savings Bank’s “Launchpad” competition.
