Portland population posts second-highest gain in New England
PORTLAND, Maine — According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population increase in the Portland metro area last year was the second highest in New England. The city added 3,189 residents, an increase of o.61 percent, which was behind only Boston among the 14 New England metro areas.
State officials welcomed the news of more Portland area residents, as Maine is working to counter to forecasts of an aging workforce.
The Census Bureau, which defines the Portland metropolitan area as Cumberland, York and Sagadahoc counties, also noted that Cumberland County was the fastest growing country in the state.
