Farmington program helps aspiring lumberjacks take the first chop
FARMINGTON, Maine — Thanks to a unique forestry program at Foster Career and Technical Education Center in Farmington, high school students can earn a high school degree and certification as a logging professional. The technical center, part of Mt. Blue High School, is one of only four institutions offering such a forestry career program in the state.
Although the state’s paper industry is facing some challenges, most employers say an aging workforce and the cost of training new employees will keep demand high for trained loggers. And, according to Maine forestry industry officials, as long as there is a need for wood and paper products, most of the state’s forestry industry employers anticipate demand for younger workers for years to come.
