Maine fishing ports net top rankings
PORTLAND, Maine — Thanks to the strength of the state’s lobster landings, a number of Maine communities ranked high in the nation for commercial fish landings. The Fisheries of the U.S. report for 2013 was compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Boasting commercial fish landings with an overall value of $49 million, Stonington was Maine’s top port. Portland led the state in overall volume, bringing ashore 62 million pounds in commercial fish landings in 2013. Rockland and Vinalhaven also made the rankings of the nation’s top fishing ports.
Lobster led the way for Maine, as the state hauled in 127 million pounds of the 149 million pounds caught nationwide. Overall, Maine’s commercial fish landings totaled over $473 million, which ranked the state third nationwide.
