Bar Harbor braces for big boat arrivals

This warm season will be a busy one in Bar Harbor, as 138 cruise ships are scheduled to anchor in Frenchman Bay or dock at the local pier. That number is up from 131 in 2013. Notable among those ships, the Cunard Cruise Flagship Line’s Queen Mary 2 is planning two visits in the fall.

The increase in cruise ship visit also means an expected increase in visits to town, as well. Bar Harbor officials are estimating a 17-percent increase in passenger visits over 2013. The majority of those visitors will be ferried to town via small tender boats carried by the big cruise ships.

Local officials also noted the expected cruse ship count doesn’t include the large number of private boats that also visit Bar Harbor each year.
